What Is Genie At Disney?

To understand how Genie Plus works, let’s explain the basic Disney Genie experience. Using the My Disney Experience app, you automatically have access to Disney Genie. This free service offers attraction and dining recommendations, forecasted wait times, a personalized itinerary, and the ability to make dining reservations or order food.

Disney Genie also offers a map of each park with estimated wait times for various attractions throughout the parks. The accuracy of these wait times isn’t always great, but they can at least give you a ballpark idea. The app allows you to put together your own itinerary and can accommodate dining reservations made in advance. When creating a “My Day” itinerary, the app automatically considers your priorities, Park Hopper tickets, walking time, and more.

Genie Plus offers everything the Disney Genie has, plus the ability to reserve Lightning Lane tickets for specific rides and attractions. If you’ve been to Disney World in the past, you’re most likely familiar with their FastPass system. Genie Plus and Lightning Lanes are set to replace FastPass altogether.

While Disney Genie is free to use, you must pay to use Genie Plus. This feature costs $15 per person per day. Guests can purchase their Genie Plus service while they purchase their park tickets or vacation packages. If you only want to use Genie Plus on specific days during your trip, you can pay for the service on that day during the vacation.

You can purchase a Lightning Lane pass through Genie Plus for one of the many attractions across the four parks at the beginning of your day. We recommend selecting your first pass as close to 7:00 am as possible to avoid missing out on a pass to your favorite ride.

Once you’ve chosen a pass, you must wait until either you’ve used the pass or for 120 minutes (two hours) after your selection was made. On average, guests can utilize between two to three passes in a day.

If you’re vacationing with a group, everyone in your party must purchase Genie Plus to make these selections available to everyone. You can also mix and match Genie Plus Lightning Lane passes. If half of your party wants to ride Peter Pan’s Flight and the other half prefers Splash Mountain, you can customize who gets which Lightning Lane pass in the My Disney Experience app.

Genie Plus also offers PhotoPass downloads at Disneyland, AR filters for photos, and guided audio tours of the parks at Disney World.

What Are Individual Lightning Lane Selections?

While you can use Genie Plus to purchase Lightning Lane passes for numerous attractions, some rides are not available through this service. That’s where Individual Lightning Lane Selections come into play.

These passes can be purchased by guests with or without Genie Plus. The prices start at $7 per attraction and can cost up to $15 per person, depending on the ride and your vacation dates.

Visitors are limited to two Individual Lightning Lane selections per day. You cannot choose the same two attractions in a day for your Individual Lightning Lane selections. Guests cannot purchase Individual Lightning Lane passes until the park they are visiting opens.

Guests staying at a Walt Disney World resort can buy their first Individual Lightning Lane pass at 7:00 am, giving them an advantage over non-resort guests.

Individual Lightning Lane Selections are reserved for the following rides:

  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
  • Space Mountain (Starting August 7, 2022)
  • Avatar Flight of Passage
  • Expedition Everest (Starting August 7, 2022)
  • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance
  • Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway (Starting August 7, 2022)
  • Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure
  • Frozen Ever After (Starting August 7, 2022)

Pros of Genie, Genie Plus, and Individual Lightning Lane

We’ve compiled a brief list displaying the best features of the three services Disney is currently offering to improve your vacation experience.

Disney Genie

  • Park Maps: With the free app, you have access to park maps that display wait times. This feature gives you an idea of which attractions to do first and which are best to plan for later in the day.
  • Dining Reservations: You can add any dining reservations into your itinerary, which helps keep your group on schedule throughout the day.

Genie Plus

  • Skip the Line: With Genie Plus, you can skip the standby line and use Lightning Lane at your favorite attractions.
  • Audio Tours: While you wait for your Genie Plus selection to refresh, you can explore the park with audio tours to learn more about the history and secrets of Disney World.
  • Planning Ahead: Genie Plus is a great way to plan ahead for your day. If you’re a more Type A personality and enjoy having a set schedule, Genie Plus might be helpful to you. Guests can select their Genie Plus Lightning Lane passes and plan the rest of their day around their chosen times.

Individual Lightning Lane

  • Availability: Anyone with a valid park ticket can purchase the Individual Lightning Lane selections. This means you don’t have to buy Genie Plus on top of the Individual Lightning Lane selection.
  • Exclusive Rides: Disney created the Individual Lightning Lane passes for their most popular rides across the parks. This service means anyone visiting a Disney park has a chance to ride fan-favorite attractions without waiting in a standby line for hours.

Cons of Disney Genie, Genie Plus, and Individual Lightning Lane

With positives come negatives, and there are a few factors the new Disney services include that aren’t the best for vacationers.

Cons of Disney Genie

  • IT Issues: Unfortunately, the My Disney Experience app has been known to crash. A lot. There have also been complaints that wait times for attractions are not as accurate as possible, making planning a day more difficult.
  • Inaccurate Recommendations: Some users have brought up that their attraction and dining recommendations haven’t been consistent with the preferences they enter into the app. For example, users who specify attractions they want to visit may still get recommendations for entirely different rides and experiences.

Cons of Genie Plus

  • Cost: The biggest downfall to Genie Plus is that it replaces the free FastPass system Disney has offered for years. With Genie Plus taking over, guests have no choice but to pay for Lightning Lane access at any attraction or ride.
  • You Snooze, You Lose: Genie Plus Lightning Lane passes go fast. Suppose guests want to sleep in before making their selections. In that case, the chances of there being passes to more popular rides throughout the day are slim.

Cons of Individual Lightning Lane

  • No Re-Rides: Guests can only purchase an Individual Lightning Lane pass for a ride once per day.
  • Price Changes: The price of Individual Lightning Lane changes depending on the popularity of the attraction and the time of year you visit.
